Islands Facts
A
1996 census counted 219,521 people living
in French Polynesia, 74 percent of which
live in the Windward Island, 12 percent
in the Leeward Islands, 7 percent in the
Tuamotu archipelago, 3.5 percent in the
Marguesas Islands, and 3 percent in the
Austral Islands. The Tahitians are a handsome
people noted for their hospitality, friendliness
and easygoing approach to life.
Location:
Tahiti
and Her Islands comprise an area officially
known as French Polynesia. The islands are
scattered over four million square kilometers
of ocean in the eastern South Pacific and
consists of five archipelagoes: the Society
Islands, Austral Islands, Marquesas Islands,
Tuamotu atolls and the Mangareva Islands.
Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia.
Cooled
by the gentle breezes of the Pacific, the
climate in French Polynesia is sunny and pleasant.
There are two seasons: from November through
May the climate is warmer and humid, while
April through October is cooler and drier.
Most of the rain falls during the warmer season,
but there are also many lovely sunny days
during these months, with refreshing trade
winds.
French
Polynesia is 10 hours behind Greenwich Mean
Time, 2 hours behind US Pacific Standard
Time, and 20 hours behind Australian Eastern
Standard Time.

The
Marquesas Islands are a 1/2 hour ahead of
the rest of French Polynesia

The
currency in Tahiti is the French Pacific
Franc (CFP), though credit cards and
US dollars are common. Though exchange
rates vary, there are approximately
100CFP to the US Dollar. Traveler's
Cheques are easily cashed at banks and
hotels. All banks charge a 350 to 400CFp
(US $3.50 to $4.00) commission on traveler's
cheque transaction.
All
visitors to French Polynesia must have
a valid passport, which depending on
the nationality of the visitor, contains
a valid visa. Such visitors must also
have an airline ticket back to their
resident country or to at least two
more continuing destinations. Visitors
must also have sufficient amount of
funds to cover planned stay in the territory.
Citizens of certain countries are exempt
from all visa requirements for stays
of three months of less.
French
Polynesia enjoys a high standard of
health, with excellent medical and dental
services, pharmacies, private clinics
and a large goverment hospital in Tahiti,
which is open 24 hours. The outer islands
have hospitals or dispensaries and a
few private practitioners. Please take
precaution and do not overexpose your
body to the tropical sun. Tennis shoes
or plastic sandals are recommended when
walking on the reefs and in the lagoons
of Polynesia. Certificates of inoculations
against cholera, yellow fever and the
plague are required for visitors arriving
from an infected area as defined by
the World Health Organization.
Tipping
is not expected in Tahiti and Her Islands
Departure
Tax:
An
8 percent tax is added to the cost of
a room in the hotels of French Polynesia.
This tax does not apply to the pensions
and family lodgings. There are no sales
taxes and no airport taxes.
Tap
water in the hotels and restaurants
is safe to drink. Local mineral waters
and all sorts of French mineral waters
are available.
